Relax la! my dear juniors!
i dun think many juniors read my blog, but i shall still say this anyway.
gosh! horror beyond horror... i was at the hospital on LABOUR DAY... 1 day before i start work officially!! tt certainly predicts what kinda life i'm gonna lead for the next 1 year huh? haaii...
eh... wait a min... this blog's not abt me. let's not digress. haha!
the ultimate horror of all horrors beyond horror... we saw some youngish ppl in clinical attire with the ever-so-familiar lanyard plus black n white name tag lurking around in the hospital!! on LABOUR DAY!!
hmm... they din paste the red/green/blue sticker on their name tag, so din know which yr they belong to.
if they're gonna be yr 5's... ok la... understand how they feel. cos i was as jitterish when i was gonna start yr 5 and actually felt like working harder in the hospitals (except i din quite do it la... haha!). but still... u're supposed to be doing ur electives now! fun fun time!! should enjoy ur life as much as possible!!! please lor... i did elective posting in auzzie where 4 outta 7 days of the week were spent doing the electives and the other 3 were travelling!! n i survived!! definitely a no-no to be seen in the hospital during a public hol... tsktsk...
if they're moving on to yr 4... com'on! yr 4's can afford to slack a bit la. generally, half the no. of hours in the ward during NORMAL days will do. public hols is a perfect time to go socialize, go out and do something fun!! to rejuvenate urself!! although there's O n G to pass in yr 4, aiya... it's not tt bad really...
if they're doing E-clinics now, aiyo!!! i think they're really mad... look at us! we din even have E-clinics and we survived! so which means, with minimum participation in E-clinics, u'll prob survive better than us even. so need to go back on a public hol?? of course NOT!!
anyway, i had this urge to walk up to them n ask them why they were there on a public hol. and perhaps tell them that they have ONE ENTIRE HO YEAR to come to the hospital on public hols. by then, they won't have any choice!
oh well... but then, who am i to give advice actually? maybe they're in a different league from me altogether. throughout all my med sch, i was just aiming to pass and be average or above average whereas they may be aiming for dean's list.
i think i kinda lost my desire to be top of the class somewhere in yr 1 (or rather, i should call it "gained enlightenment in yr 1"). maybe i realized it's quite an unattainable goal... with sooo many natural talents and hardworking peops in medicine. i guess i also reached a certain age where life no longer just revolves around pure studying. so many other things started to matter to me... like my friends, my hobbies, my emotional n psychological well-being, etc.
i'm glad i made tt choice. cos now i can look back at my 5 yrs in medical sch and not see ONLY medical sch.
tt's prob one golden advice i wanna give the juniors... n of course such advice will never be heeded (judging by the muggerish appearance of our dear juniors). coincidentally, an inspiring prof said the same thing to us since we're at the start of an exciting career... she said in this long road of our medicine career, it's impt to have distractions outside of medicine. it's impt to continue ur hobbies and other interests. n i think i'm definitely gonna listen to her! haha!

of course you can give advise to the younger ones (coming HO, medical students). But as you go along your career path, you will learn better, and will be able to provide better advise too.
Medicine is Singapore is definitely more difficult than overseas. Singapore demands more especially Singaporean... Strive on, you will make it..
