osce test...
just finished my osce test... haha! quite fun la... i had to smoke my way through some of the patients...

Patient A: so how much oral rehydration solution should i give my child?
Dr Cheong: hmm... you should give her as much as possible. it doesn't matter.
Patient A: then she won't become bloated right?
Dr Cheong: don't worry. her kidneys will remove the water if there's extra but we're more worried about her becoming dehydrated now.

Patient B (very agitated and irate): you mean for the whole night, nobody noticed the swollen and bruised arm? was anyone working or not?
Dr Cheong: (stunned speechless for 5 sec)
Dr Cheong: the bruising and swelling could have occurred very fast and it can easily be missed. erm... (trying to change topic) right now, we're more concerned about his haemoglobin level. it is too low and we'll need to set another iv line for him on the other hand.
Patient B: you are going to set another one for him? I have no more confidence in you!
Dr Cheong: ... ... (decided to use soft approach) i'm very sorry this has happened to your father. i will set a new plug and personally make sure such a thing won't happen again.
(supposed to explain to patient on a procedure called OGD)
Patient C: i have this tummy pain and i'm very worried i got cancer. (1st time)
Dr Cheong: don't worry. you're only 25 years old. you're at very very low risk of getting cancer. the OGD will be a good test to do because we can look into your stomach and intestines and see immediately if there's any lump, etc. blahblah...
Patient C: but i'm really very scared i got cancer. (2nd time)
Dr Cheong: as i said, don't worry. stomach cancer usually happens to older patients. what you have is most probably some inflammation or ulcer of the stomach which can be very easily cured.
Patient C: but i really think i got cancer. (3rd time)
Dr Cheong: (suddenly got what i'm supposed to say) oh... why do you think so?
Patient C: (looked kinda relieved for me... cos i finally asked the right question) cos my uncle had stomach cancer. i'm scared he can pass it on to me... is it hereditary?

haha! thought the whole set-up felt like a funfair... it was this huge ward with a lot of partitions. altogether 6 circuits with 10 stations each. before we entered, someone was speaking into the microphone... things like "will the examiners and simulated patients go to their respective places." sounded like the DJ at a funfair...
lotsa colours around... cos each circuit was colour-coded. haha! then there were some tables full of refreshments... everyone was walking about looking very excited. haha! we were just lacking some balloons and mascots...
oh well... hopefully i passed... think should be ok... *crossing fingers*
one more obstacle down... inching closer n closer to mbbs...

haha. i had some help from the "patients" too! they were very well primed. at 1 station, the lady offered to repeat to me the steps i just taught her and i said: "that's a very good idea!"
half the time i was just asking if they had any questions because it seem much easier to answer their questions than to just talk non-stop.
