BMI overload
Anaesthetists are obsessed about many things. We're quite an obsessive-compulsive bunch of ppl. There is one thing that definitely warrants our obsession: OBESITY.
Whatever happens, i'll never allow myself to become obese. (haha... my frens will say "even if u try really hard, u'll never get there!") Beyond being superficial and placing too much emphasis on appearance, it is actually DANGEROUS to be obese!
One nurse told me when we were desperately trying to cannulate an obese patient's veins, "Wah... this patient will die very easily in times of need." And she's right! We tried for at least half an hour and still couldn't get the cannula in!! If he were having a cardiac arrest, brain death would have occurred and the patient would not have a single drop of adrenaline in his blood yet.
Not only difficult veins, they're difficult to intubate too! Anaesthetists, the experts at Airway control, never fail to frown when we see that thick, short neck, double (sometimes triple) receding chin and heavy jaw. No airway = no oxygen = DIE.
Of course, not to mention all the medical problems are associated with obesity! 1. hypertension 2. diabetes... eventually leading to 3. ischaemic heart disease ... ...
(yoohoo!! this is a blog... not a review article on "Anaesthesia in the Obese Patient".)
So looking at the way i eat... how to not become obese in the long run? the only way is to exercise and keep fit! I really eat a LOT! The OT food auntie can vouch for me, although i think she might not remember. cos EVERYDAY during lunch, i'll tell her "auntie, more... more... MORE RICE!" and she'll go "u sure or not? u can finish MEH?"
Plus i dun control my diet. When i feel like eating fried chicken, i'll eat fried chicken with skin-in-situ. When i feel like eating waffle with a thick slab of margarine from prima deli, i have no qualms with almost drinking melted fats. With every depressing night call, the calorie load doubles somemore!
Burning away these calories and keeping my heart pumping becomes even more important! Gosh... what've i been thinking last time? the 2+ years with absolutely no exercise!!
I must try to convert more ppl... do my part in fighting obesity and promoting healthy living! Yo! wanna go gym/running with me?
